Tracy Bays-Boothe Spotlight

“The beautiful setting, ample parking, warmth and professionalism of their staff and volunteers creates the perfect setting to celebrate creativity and gather community!” Art is everywhere, but unfortunately sometimes we can’t see it unless special people go the extra distance to find it and share it with the world. The DrawBridge organization, and its Executive […]

Connecting

I was driving to Filoli with some very important scions as a passenger earlier this week. These cuttings were from our Mission Pear Tree. The Mission Pear is important to our community and to many people, not to mention some history of Marin County. The connections created by this tree began to resonate as I […]

Linda Novy Spotlight

“You can see people feeling exuberant about being alive, living in Marin, and Marin Art and Garden Center itself. It’s like a big container holding all this community energy.” Linda Novy has experienced many of the picturesque landscapes that make up the United States. Living in Illinois, she saw the elegant contrast of great lakes […]

Studio Takeover by the Garden School

In February, the Garden School hosted an art show! The children of the Garden School spent a couple months creating and curating work for a fabulous exhibition in our gallery space, The Studio. All the art displayed was 100% done by the children. Art was created by following the children’s interests in various art media […]

Open to the Public

Michael manages a runaway Come one, come all! As a gardener to some very public gardens, I have observed some self-evident truths about the shared spaces that are public gardens. In no particular order—except for safety first—they are as follows: Safety first. Expect the unexpected. Always be kind to children. Always know where the nearest […]

Lilia Chandran Spotlight

“Looking up at the Giant Sequoia is always awe-inspiring. When I have the time, I love to go up to the basketry garden. It’s one of the garden’s little hidden treasures.” In a region with unparalleled natural beauty, it is the task of local creators to capture its magnificence and return it to the world […]

Lisa Tsubouchi Spotlight

“It feels really special to be working events in the same place my grandmother used to work, maybe 70 or 80 years ago. It feels somehow meant to be.” Some people have recently learned about Marin Art and Garden Center at events like the summer concerts or Edible Garden. Others have been visiting for years […]

Helping Hands

Crataegus phaenopyrum was struggling. Commonly known as Washington Hawthorn, the small tree had everything a hawthorn could get: mites, scale, blight and cedar rust, along with a bifurcated crown. Beyond all that, it was in an odd location. I planned to remove it on a dry day in February. As luck would have it, the […]

Claudia Campazzo Spotlight

“The garden allows me to express my love of the natural world and its endless variety. I have a deep appreciation for its rich history and enduring traditions.” Art and nature go together like the moon and stars. For millions of years, the delicate texture of a rose petal, the flight of a butterfly, or […]

Cynda Vyas Spotlight

“It’s wonderful that the Marin Art and Garden Center can remain open and free to the public. It’s an asset to the community that anyone can wander the grounds to enjoy doing watercolors, get inspiration for their own gardens, and find beauty and tranquility.” As the seasons change, and seeds from previous blooms give birth […]

IRS Guidelines for Gifts from Donor Advised Funds to Support MAGC Events

Thank you for your interest in giving to the Marin Art & Garden Center events from your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or Family Foundation.

We sincerely appreciate your generosity and support!

To ensure your gift follows the current IRS guidelines for DAF/Family Foundation support of an event, we would like to share the below guidelines with you.

  • Raffle tickets, tickets to galas and other special events, auction items, and benefits conferred in connection with a DAF/foundation grant are not permitted.
    • IRS has specifically ruled that fair market value associated with fundraising events cannot be separated, a practice known as “bifurcation.”
      • For example, with Edible Garden, if the price of the ticket is $200 and the FMV fair market value (non-tax-deductible amount) is designated to be $50, the donor must pay from sources other than her DAF/foundation for the full value of the ticket ($200) and not just for the non-tax-deductible amount ($50).
    • We recommend you confer with your financial advisor to confirm if any of these examples of how donors may still use their DAF to support an event would work for you:
      • A donor could sponsor the event, and not attend, and pay fully out of the DAF/foundation.
      • A donor could sponsor the event using DAF/foundation funds and attend by purchasing an individual ticket through non-DAF/foundation funds.
      • A donor could sponsor the event, join the event as a guest of another donor/table guest, and pay fully out of the DAF/foundation.
      • A donor could sponsor the event and host the afforded number of people at their chosen level as long as they pay for the seats at the lowest ticket price ($200 for Edible Garden) outside of their DAF.
        • As an example, a $1,500 sponsor that covers 2 guests, could pay for their sponsorship with $400 from a different source of funds, and then give an additional gift of $1,100 out of their DAF.
