Le Printemps & Haiku
What will open the gate for inspired haiku? Could it be a floodgate because of lilac, hibiscus, or buttercup? How will Spring germinate poems as seedling sprouts? Might the awakened brain pause wherever buds aglow with poppy, daffodil, iris? Pssst. Just bend your ear. Or forget–me-not how much hearts plump up after a year’s patience? Come along to behold infinity by ranunculus’s fire?
Yes! Come by and Spring forth haiku!
Rather than letting it run away, how about taking time – to bloom! Adventure to a secret garden – combining cultured cadence of words with smiles found in lush landscape.
Come outside and walk. Get away from clock’s ticking, digits flashing and towards the verdant fields of Spring’s calling. Why not welcome a flying painted-lady or monarch to land on your lap as you gaze across the cattail + dragonfly embellished pond! Take long, slow breaths as fragrance of floral abundance surrounds you. If poetry could smitten you, make it an arranged marriage in this heavenly le printemps garden. Come by and Spring Forth Haiku!
Renowned Bay Area poet, Robert Hass has translated many haiku of Matsuo Basho’s – this one uses a contrary voice to spotlight Japan’s most iconic image for this season.
The oak tree:
not interested
in cherry blossoms.
—Basho, translated by Robert Hass
Writings of 17 syllables is our objective, but our intent is to share written notes in the garden that led us to find our own truth.
For all ages, the simple yet focused act of writing haiku has benefits beyond the page, including an increased sense of meaning, and pleasure in life. It also cultivates a deep respect for nature’s contribution to our well-being. Writing is rewarding but haiku writing is the toast of a soiree!
In the spirit of a soiree, this is for all ages and children under 14 may sign up with an adult. Please bring pen and paper or your preferred writing supplies.
This free workshop, from 3-5pm has a minimum of 3 participants and a maximum of 30.
