Dutchman's Pipevine

Nancy Wheeler Klippert

Aristolochia californica

Colored pencil on film

18″ x 14″

After graduating from the University of Wyoming with a BFA degree, I moved to Santa Rosa, California.

I worked for many years in accounting, primarily in the wine and vineyard industry. Upon retiring I began, in earnest, to refresh and enrich my artistic skills.

I became involved in the botanical art world through my colored pencil classes and that has been my focus for more than a decade.

In 2010 I joined the ASBA and have been a NCalSBA board member for 6 years, currently serving as treasurer.

I work almost exclusively with oil based colored pencils on drafting film.

My “Dutchman’s Pipevine” depicts the plant in very early spring. This my very favorite stage, as the “pipes” are abundant. A few of the prior year’s leaves remain attached as new growth is just beginning.

This is the host plant for the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly.
