ASBA and Marin Art and Garden Center are collaborating to present the 28th Annual International Exhibition of Botanical Art, their fourth biennial appearance in this beautiful Northern California location. The exhibition of 46 original botanical artworks from an international slate of artists will hang in The Studio, the Center’s hub for cultural programming. Simultaneously, the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists will mount a second exhibition featuring its sketchbook exchange project.

ASBA and MAGC will present in-person workshops as well as a virtual studio visit while the exhibition is on view. A full color catalog of artworks included will be available.

The selection jury chose 46 artworks from 135 entries. Artists included are from the US, Canada, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, and Ukraine.

A hands-on workshop exploring botanical art through graphite drawing and watercolor techniques, inspired by plants in the gardens.

September 28| 9 am–1 pm

Botanical Linocut Printmaking
with Olga Ryabtsova

In this workshop, we’ll explore the complete linocut process from sketching and transferring your design to printing greeting cards.

October 11 | 10 am–12 pm

Explore Sketching for Fun
with Lee McCaffree

Explore simple sketching using pen or pencil outside in the garden. All experience levels welcome.

October 17 | 10 am–2 pm

Autumn Leaves in Colored Pencil
with Nina Antze

Spend a day playing with a variety of colored pencil techniques and creating the vibrant colors of the changing autumn leaves.

November 2 | 2 pm–4 pm

Pen and Ink Workshop
with Kristin Jakob

Studio-style class demonstrating pen and ink drawing techniques with one-on-one coaching. Supplies will be provided.

November 7 | 10 am–4 pm

Introduction to Botanical Art
with Catherine Watters

This class will introduce you to the world of Botanical Art using graphite, watercolor, or colored pencil.

Virtual Studio Visits

Get an inside look and learn about one of the artist’s process and workspaces, in this virtual studio visit. Participation fee is $15 for ASBA members, $20 for non-members.

IRS Guidelines for Gifts from Donor Advised Funds to Support MAGC Events

Thank you for your interest in giving to the Marin Art & Garden Center events from your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or Family Foundation.

We sincerely appreciate your generosity and support!

To ensure your gift follows the current IRS guidelines for DAF/Family Foundation support of an event, we would like to share the below guidelines with you.

  • Raffle tickets, tickets to galas and other special events, auction items, and benefits conferred in connection with a DAF/foundation grant are not permitted.
    • IRS has specifically ruled that fair market value associated with fundraising events cannot be separated, a practice known as “bifurcation.”
      • For example, with Edible Garden, if the price of the ticket is $200 and the FMV fair market value (non-tax-deductible amount) is designated to be $50, the donor must pay from sources other than her DAF/foundation for the full value of the ticket ($200) and not just for the non-tax-deductible amount ($50).
    • We recommend you confer with your financial advisor to confirm if any of these examples of how donors may still use their DAF to support an event would work for you:
      • A donor could sponsor the event, and not attend, and pay fully out of the DAF/foundation.
      • A donor could sponsor the event using DAF/foundation funds and attend by purchasing an individual ticket through non-DAF/foundation funds.
      • A donor could sponsor the event, join the event as a guest of another donor/table guest, and pay fully out of the DAF/foundation.
      • A donor could sponsor the event and host the afforded number of people at their chosen level as long as they pay for the seats at the lowest ticket price ($200 for Edible Garden) outside of their DAF.
        • As an example, a $1,500 sponsor that covers 2 guests, could pay for their sponsorship with $400 from a different source of funds, and then give an additional gift of $1,100 out of their DAF.
